The National Hydraulic Resources Institute (INDRHI) announced yesterday, Wednesday, 6 April 2016, that they are about to launch a major operation to clean the irrigation systems in the north of the country, especially along the Yaque River. The plan is to help farmers take maximum advantage of the water that is supplied for their crops.
INDRHI north region director, Marino Abreu told Diario Libre that the program will benefit 11,000 farmers who receive water from the canals that are managed by INDHRI. He said that more than 760,000 tareas are currently planted with rice, plantains, bananas and other crops and they received their irrigation water through the canals.
In related news, the Agriculture Ministry’s regional director, Emiliano Ruben, pointed out that the land preparation is being carried out in coordination with several government agencies. He said that the great abundance of crops in local markets is the result of this work. Ruben also said that farmers had received technical assistance as well as financing from the Agricultural Bank and the Special Fund for Farm Development combined with advice on marketing and selling their products.
