The Centro de Medicina Avanzada y Telemedicina (Cedimat) in Santo Domingo says it was not able to treat late national hero Claudio Caamano because they did not have any rooms available in their intensive care unit when he was brought in with serious injuries following a road accident on 20 March 2016. The medical center said that the patient had arrived without previous notification. A spokesperson stated that it was not a monetary issue, because Caamano’s insurance would have covered the treatment, but the lack of availability of units in the intensive care facility.
Cedimat says that the patient remained in the ambulance for 23 minutes before being sent to the Clinica Abreu where there was space available and a surgeon was called. The family, nevertheless, decided against using the services of the Abreu Clinic, and transferred the patient to the UCE where he eventually died about 34 hours after the accident.
A report on the incident released by the Ministry of Public Health calls for an increase in the number of trauma specialists to deal with emergency cases at hospitals.
