Monte Plata: Making a difference in sports

According to a report in today’s Hoy newspaper, Monday 11 April 2016, the province of Monte Plata has the honor of having produced the country’s two most recent Olympic Games medalists: Luguelin Santos in the 400m hurdles (London 2012) and Gabriel Mercedes in taekwondo (Beijing 2008).

The journalist points out that 10 years after the celebration of the National Sports Games in the province in 2006 it can attest to having a sports development level that is probably more impressive than any other province in the country. The reason was that in contrast with what occurred with other celebrations of the National Sports Games that would be hosted in the provincial capitals, in the case of Monte Plata the facilities were distributed across the main provincial municipalities – Bayaguana, Yamasa, Sabana Grande de Boya and Monte Plata. Another difference was that the facilities have been well looked after by the community.
