A news story in Diario Libre points out that Dominican Major League Baseball players have been born in all but three of the 32 Dominican provinces and the National District. The three provinces are of the poorest n Pedernales, Bahoruco and Independencia n and are on the border with Haiti.
The National District (capital city Santo Domingo) is the birthplace of most Major League players, with 178 of the 643 players. Another 18 were born in the United States to Dominican parents n and they include Alex Rodriguez, Moises Alou, Ronnie Belliard, Dellin Betances and Manny Machado.
The report says that many years ago, most Dominican Major League Baseball players were from the province of San Pedro de Macoris, but this has changed over the years, with most now hailing from the province of Santo Domingo where most baseball academies are located.
The story adds that while 178 players are registered as having been born in Santo Domingo, many of them actually grew up in the provinces.
