The vice president of the Dominican Republic Industries Association (AIRD) and the president of the Dominican Republic Bosses Confederation (Copardom) Circe Almanzar and Joel Santos say that in a fiscal reform priority must be given to achieving efficiency in government spending. They were interviewed separately in response to the recent view expressed by the Inter-American Development Bank that in-depth tax reform is required in Latin America and the Caribbean but this time mentions the need for improvements in government spending and efficiency in tax collection.
On the same topic, economist Ernesto Selman of the Regional Center for Economic Sustainable Strategies (CREES) said that the taxation system in the country is penalizing and also called for comprehensive taxation reform.
Other business sector representatives who were interviewed also expressed their agreement with the IDB viewpoint for the need for improvements in the efficiency of government spending versus just increasing taxation as has occurred in previous tax reforms.
The presidents of the Association of Herrera Industries (AEIH) Antonio Taveras and the Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) Osvaldo Oller agreed that in addition to a comprehensive tax reform the Dominican Republic needs to pass a fiscal responsibility bill in order to reduce the high levels of wasteful government spending.
