Conep president worries about debt

National Business Council (Conep) president Rafael Blanco Canto, speaking yesterday afternoon Wednesday, 13 April 2016 expressed fears that the Dominican Republic would not be able to withstand any more debt. Blanco Canto mentioned the excessive government spending during the presidential campaign. “Any fiscal deficit ends up being covered by foreign debt, because there is no longer any capacity to collect these resources inside the country,” he said.

He warned that the ever-growing debt could force the country to seek the assistance of the International Monetary Fund yet again.

Blanco Canto was speaking after a meeting between business leaders and the PRM presidential candidate Luis Abinader, who outlined his economic proposals.
