Ozama cleanup begins

President Danilo Medina has formally launched the construction of the “most important cleanup project ever built in the country,” a water treatment plant for the Ozama River being built at a cost of EUR55.7 million. Spanish construction firm Incatema Consulting will be in charge of its implementation. During the inauguration yesterday, Wednesday, 13 April 2016 Santo Domingo Water and Sewers Corporation director Alejandro Montas said the project would benefit nearly half a million residents of Santo Domingo North. Montas pointed out that at present, only 18% of Santo Domingo’s streets of have sewers and only 5% of this wastewater is treated. The sewage generated by local residential neighborhoods, combined with effluent from 54 industries in the area, will be treated according to its physical and chemical properties as well as its bacteriological content, said Montas.

The first phase of the turnkey project is being financed through Deutsche Bank and will be implemented in three phases with expansions planned for every 10 years, according to the Santo Domingo Sewerage Master Plan.
