Medina: Fiscal reform is needed

Fiscal reform In the Dominican Republic usually means more taxes. As government has grown, taxpayers have had to foot the bill. The private sector is calling for more efficient use of resources, as according to the World Economic Forum, the Dominican government is a world leader when it comes to wasteful spending.

Speaking at the National Business Council (Conep) yesterday, Thursday 14 April 2016, President Danilo Medina made it clear there would be a tax reform in his next term of government. The PLD holds an absolute majority in Congress and is expected to maintain it in the 2016 general election.

Addressing the issue of the ever-increasing debt being taken on by the country, Medina said that the only way to avoid taking on any more debt was through fiscal reform. Speaking at the event, Conep president Rafael Blanco Canto said that the pending Fiscal Pact with the government and private sector was needed in order to turn the country into an exporting country. Blanco Canto highlighted that it was the first time that a President had visited the offices of the National Business Council. President Medina visited Conep for a breakfast meeting with the board and presented some of his future government proposals to the business sector leaders.

Diario Libre’s editorial today, Friday 15 April 2015 warns that the government’s capacity to take on international loans to pay for its wasteful spending has been stretched to the limit and that the plan seems to be to penalize the middle class and the productive sectors with more taxes.
