Canadian Roman Catholic nun Joan Tinkess has just published a book, “No Turning Back” on her experiences in the Dominican Republic where she arrived to work as a missionary in Yamasa, to the north of Santo Domingo in 1958, when dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo was still in power. She ended up spending two more decades in the country.
A CBC report about the book says that Tinkess has made frequent return trips to the DR to visit the many people with whom she maintains close friendships.
“My students are grandparents and the women we worked with n oh my gosh, they’re just the best, they were the best,” she said.
Tinkess hopes that Canadians who read her book learn there is more to the DR than recreational activities. “I’d like them to realize that the Dominican Republic isn’t only a place for destination weddings and for Punta Cana, which I’ve never visited,” she said. “That it’s a people who have really struggled for freedom,” she told CBC.
