Leading opposition candidate Luis Abinader of the PRM has pledged to reduce taxes in order to stop penalizing consumption and production. On the campaign trail in La Vega yesterday, Sunday 17 April 2016, he offered to build aqueducts and increase social assistance programs. Former President Hipolito Mejia accompanied him during his visit to Jarabacoa. Abinader called for the increase in programs for young people and said that the funds would be obtained by eliminating SUV purchase perks for government officials. “What I am promising is pennies compared to the wasteful spending and the corruption in place today,” said Abinader when campaigning for change in La Vega.
