The Auxiliary Bishop of Santo Domingo, Monsenor Victor Masalles has presented the Catholic Church’s official views on the new Penal Code proposal to the Chamber of Deputies.
The prelate stated that the new proposed Penal Code contains new aspects such as the increase in sentences for several crimes and an accumulation of sentences with respect to organized crime. He also added that it also defines serious crimes such as genocide, forced disappearance of people, contract killings, femicide, torture, sexual violence and the penalization of the invasion and occupation of land, aimed at reducing the high levels of violence in Dominican society.
For their part, PRSC members Victor (Ito) Bisono and Pedro Botello said that they would take on the initiative to the debate in the Chamber of Deputies and would defend the proposal submitted by the Catholic Church in all its scenarios as established by the law.
