Ministry of Energy and Mines stops ferronickel leaving the country

Energy and Mines Minister Antonio Isa Conde has announced that he prevented Falconbridge Dominicana from exporting a consignment of ferronickel via the port at Haina without having completed the necessary paperwork, yesterday Monday 18 April 2016.

According to a press release, the cargo packed into four containers was stopped during an operation organized by the ministry, represented by Security Director Colonel Elvis Abreu, the Specialized Corps of Port Security and the Customs Department.

Isa Conde said that they took the decision because the new owners of Falconbridge, Americano Nickel Limited, had still not completed the legal requirements for operating the ferronickel mine in Bonao.

He recalled that the company’s economic solvency and environmental plan, the basic requirements for resuming the mining concession that was formerly operated by Falconbridge had been requested by the ministry but the company had still not submitted them.

The minister said that the government wanted the mine to reopen with all of the benefits it would have for the local people but it had to have the necessary guarantees and must comply with the rules.
