Non graduates wearing graduation gowns was due to confusion

Presidency Special Programs director general Lidio Cadet has come out in defense of the transparency of the “Quisqueya Learns with You” literacy program, since a widely shared television report revealed that several of the people attending a large graduation ceremony for the program in Santo Domingo on Saturday, 16 April 2016 told TV reporters that they had no idea why they were there and graduating when they had never attended the literacy courses.

Cadet, nevertheless, defended the organizers of the event. He said that he regretted that some people wanted to take advantage of the confusion on the day and said that those who were interviewed on television were not actual graduates, but relatives of the graduates and had been invited to watch. He said they were dressed in the traditional graduation gowns due to confusion.

He said the mistake had occurred when the event organizers failed to take the necessary measures to organize some of the latecomers. Cadet added that the people who were wrongly wearing graduation gowns did not receive graduation certificates.

National District Mayor Roberto Salcedo said that their presence was part of a dirty tricks campaign against the PLD by the opposition parties.

Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo meanwhile has suspended the issuing of graduation certificates for the literacy program until after the election. He announced an investigation into the 2,500 people who received their graduation certificates during Saturday’s ceremony.

The NCDN investigative TV show provided proof many of the “graduates” did not know how to read or write.
