Aid sent to Ecuador

According to Civil Defense director General Rafael de Luna Pichirilo, acting on the instructions of President Danilo Medina, the government has sent a commission of rescue teams to Ecuador to help in the response to Saturday’s earthquake, which has left more than 500 people dead.

General De Luna said that the commission of 53 people and six search and rescue dogs would shortly arrive in the city of Manta.

Twenty of the commission members are from the Army’s humanitarian assistance unit and the rest belong to the Civil Defense. They are taking equipment, food and water and four of them are specialists in search and rescue in collapsed buildings. He said that the commission would stay in Ecuador for as long as they were needed.

According to Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Guillaume Long, nine foreigners who were killed in the earthquake have been identified: one United Kingdom citizen, one Dominican, two Colombians, two Canadians and three Cubans.

The Dominican has been identified as 49-year old Miguel Payano from Sanchez Ramirez province.
