Ramon De Jesus Ferrer will make history this Friday, 22 April 2016 when he becomes the first Dominican to referee a Major League Baseball game. The game will be between the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers.
Ferrer, who will be working as an umpire for the whole series, began his career as an umpire in Santo Domingo in early 2002 in a variety of amateur leagues, and continued to rise through the ranks, learning from several mentors and attending a series of umpire training programs. In this year’s Spring Training, he was part of a group of reserve umpires after passing his evaluation.
