Las Americas International Airport is still feeling the effects of the fire that began early Monday morning, 18 April 2016. On Tuesday following the fire all of the businesses, offices, the Ambassadors’ suites and VIP lounges in the Southern Terminal remained closed until the damage could be assessed following the fire in a warehouse in the terminal basement.
The fire began at 12:38am on Monday and it look at least 16 hours before it could be completely extinguished by seven firefighting units from Boca Chica, La Caleta and Santo Domingo along with a Salvage and Rescue Team.
The complete closure of all operations in the terminal also affected around 18 arriving and departing flights as Immigration, Customs, Airport Security, bank offices and all airline service centers remained closed. All shops and cafeterias on the second and third level of the terminal building were also closed due to the effects of the smoke during the fire.
The damage to the stock in the warehouse is thought to run into millions. The cause and the extent of the damage are now under investigation.
