While Dominicans are being subjected to the largest-scale propaganda campaign in living memory for the re-election of President Danilo Medina, Acento.com.do points out that these elections have been lackluster. The reason being the low level of competition between President Danilo Medina and his leading rival Luis Abinader.
Political analyst Rosario Espinal comments that the lack of electoral competitiveness is dragging voters to a “charmless” race in which 24,442 candidates are seeking more than 4,000 elected posts.
Given the lack of charm, says Espinal, people will vote according to their own convenience. If they have close links with the government, they will vote purple, while the rest will vote for one of the seven alternatives.
