The Santo Domingo branch of French hypermarket chain Carrefour has inaugurated a rooftop solar energy plant that cost more than US$2 million. The panels will supply much of the store’s energy needs. Carrefour general director Olivier Pellin said the system was installed by Solar Electric and has 4,744 panels with a 1.25 MW generation capacity on the 14,000-square meter roof of the building at Km 10.5 of Duarte Highway. Pellin said it was the largest solar roof in the country and described it as Carrefour’s contribution to the environment. He said the company has changed all its lighting to Led and installed high efficiency air-conditioning. Solar Electric general manager David Doumith estimated that Carrefour would now make savings of 30% on its power bill. According to estimates, Carrefour will recoup its investment in seven years, with a 25-year lifespan for the plant.
Jean Alain Rodriguez of the Center for Export and Investment (CEI-RD) represented the Dominican government at the event.
