Yesterday, Monday, 2 May 2016 Civil Defense brigades recovered the body of 14-year old Yandeili Quezada who drowned in the Yaque del Norte River when bathing with her father and brother. Later the bodies of 45-year old Juan Isidro Quezada, along with 16-year old Yefri Quezada were also found. The three went missing from the Pastor sector of Santiago at around 4pm on Sunday 1 May 2016.
According to Civil Defense director, Francisco Arias, they began looking for them early on Monday morning. The youngest child was the first to be found.
The province has been affected by heavy rainfall along with other areas. According to the National Meteorological Office (ONAMET) the rain is expected to continue along the Caribbean coast, central mountain area, Los Haitises and other areas in the northeast.
The worst-affected provinces will be: La Vega, Monsenor Nouel (Bonao), Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui), Espaillat (Moca), Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris), Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua), Samana, Santiago, Dajabon, San Juan, Santiago Rodriguez, Elias Pina, Bahoruco, San Jose de Ocoa, San Cristobal, Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, La Altagracia (Higuey), La Romana, El Seibo and San Pedro de Macoris.
The heavy rainfall has led to authorities to announce flood and mudslide alerts for La Vega, Monsenor Nouel (Bonao), Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui), Espaillat, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, La Altagracia (Higuey), La Romana, San Pedro de Macoris, Dajabon, Monte Plata, Santiago Rodriguez and San Juan de la Maguana.
Flood alerts are also in place for Santiago, Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris) and San Cristobal, as well as Greater Santo Domingo.
