Traveler from the DR arrested for drug smuggling at JFK

A traveler from the Dominican Republic was arrested at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after approximately nine pounds of cocaine was found in his computer bag and tucked inside his pants.

On Friday, 29 April 2016, Federal Customs and Border Protection officers noticed the unusually heavy weight of a computer bag belonging to US citizen Angelo Fernandez, who had just arrived on a flight from Santiago.

The agents said that after finding cocaine hidden in the bag’s inner panels they searched Santiago and recovered a sock filled with cocaine pellets inside his pants. The nine pounds of cocaine have an estimated street value of US$160,000 and Santiago now faces federal charges of narcotics smuggling.
