Juan Manuel Moline asks for a second chance

Following his release from Najayo Jail yesterday, Thursday 5 May 2016, Juan Manuel Moline Rodriguez appealed to society to give him a second chance. Journalists were waiting as he left Najayo Jail after serving his full 20-year sentence. He was found guilty of complicity with Mario Jose Redondo Llenas in the murder of the latter’s first cousin, 12-year old Rafael Llenas. Moline was 18 years old at the time.

Speaking to the journalists who followed him home from the jail, where he was picked up by his parents, Moline said that he served his sentence without any privileges. Moline admitted he had made a mistake and said that the time he spent in jail has enabled him to reflect and meditate on his mistake. He had special thanks for his family’s support and especially for his mother.

“As you can see I served the totality of my sentence, and I did so with the hope that by fulfilling the full sentence this would bring solace and some peace of mind to the people who were hurt by this deed,” Moline told the press.

“I made a mistake but I want to tell you that I have thought about it a lot and I take responsibility for my behavior and everyone is responsible for his actions. I plan to obey and respect the laws and be a worthy member of society,” he said.

He said he would spend time with his family to recover the lost time. He asked society to give him a second chance. “We are a Christian society and thus we must believe that everyone deserves a second chance,” he said.

When asked about the motive for his role in the crime, he said that this question had to be answered by the person who inflicted the 34 stabs, or Mario Jose Redondo Llenas who is serving 30 years in jail for murdering his cousin.

Moline called on young people to behave properly and follow the values inculcated by their parents, to turn away from crime and bad influences, lest the same thing happen to them.

Moline was sentenced to 20 years in jail and a fine of US$277,000 for collaborating with Mario Jose Redondo Llenas in the murder that took place in 1996. The 12-year old boy’s body was found in a creek in a farm inhabited by then-ambassadors of Argentina in the Dominican Republic, Luis Palma de la Calzada and Teresa Meccia de Palma. Palma and his son Martin were accused by the lawyers and Redondo Llenas himself of having planned and ordered the boy’s kidnapping and murder, but they were able to leave the country before standing trial.
