Abinader criticizes Medina government borrowing

In an interview in Diario Libre published today, Monday 9 May 2016, leading opposition candidate Luis Abinader of the PRM criticizes the Medina government for its excess borrowing. He warns that if the pace of borrowing continues, there will be a financial crisis.

Abinader said that if he wins the 15 May election, he would push through a fiscal pact without increasing taxes. He criticized the fact that 50% of all government revenue now has to go towards paying the public debt.

He says that Danilo Medina has repeatedly stated that government spending is fine, there is no excess and what the government is spending is correct and what has to be done is to increase taxes.

Abinader says that was has to be done is to adjust government spending in order to improve the quality of government spending. “We have to introduce a tax reform that is focused on development.” He stated that reducing taxes often means that the government will receive more taxes.
