Rains affect campaigning over the weekend

The heavy rains on Saturday 7 May 2016 disrupted campaigning events for the leading Dominican political candidates, including President Danilo Medina. Medina was scheduled to be in Santo Domingo East on Saturday and had to postpone the visit to this Tuesday, 10 May 2016. Campaign director Ruben Jimenez Bichara (who is also executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation) said that conditions were wrong for the campaign motorcades.

Medina’s leading rival, Luis Abinader of the PRM, was also forced to suspend his campaigning on Saturday due to the torrential rains that affected much of the country.

Abinader was scheduled to visit the southwestern province of Independencia on the border with Haiti.
