Six of the opposition presidential candidates went to the Central Electoral Board (JCE) yesterday, Monday 9 May 2016 to ask for a manual vote count at all levels of the upcoming elections.
The only opposition presidential candidate who did not attend the meeting was Hatuey de Camps of the Social Democratic Revolutionary Party.
Luis Abinader (PRM), Guillermo Moreno (Alianza Pais), Pelegrin Castillo (FNP), Soraya Aquino (PUN), Elias Wessin Chavez (PQDC) and Minou Tavarez Mirabal (Alianza para la Democracia) were at the JCE HQ for the meeting.
Guillermo Moreno said that the aim was to prevent a post-election crisis because there would be thousands of complaints about the results if the votes were not counted manually.
Electoral Law establishes the procedure that the ballot needs to be shown to the delegates of the political parties. The JCE’s new procedure eliminates this step for a direct scanning of the unseen ballot. The JCE has agreed to a manual count for the presidential election, where polls show Medina with a comfortable lead, in contrast with the legislative and municipal elections where the vote is expected to be close in several voting stations
