Expatriate Dominicans sending cash to their relatives back home are known to have contributed RD$734 billion to the Dominican economy from August 2012 to the first quarter of 2016. The Quisqueya Foundation says that its findings, based on Central Bank data, suggest that the contribution is 7.2% of GDP. The amount is comparable to 27% of total imports by the country during that period.
