Rafael Percival Pena vs. Franklin Almeyda Rancier

Former Minister of Interior and Police Franklin Almeyda Rancier has gone public saying that he would have ordered the shooting of the private plane in which the former air force general flew to distribute leaflets promoting his candidacy for senator across the banned airspace of the Presidential Palace, describing it as an act of terrorism.

The outspoken general responded by saying that the one who should be in jail is the former Minister of Interior and Police and his boss, former President Leonel Fernandez, for corruption.

He said that Almeyda should have stood trial to respond for the millions spent on food and beverages when he was at the Ministry of Interior and Police and for the Harley-Davidson motorcycles he purchased and the breathalyzers and everything that had been spent on the Barrio Seguro security plan.

He also asked why Almeyda had not “toppled” the plane in which the son of a Supreme Court of Justice judge brought US$570,000 into the country. He pointed out that although this incident occurred eight years ago, the trial has not taken place and in another two years the charges against the son of judge Rafael Luciano Pichardo, Rafael Alberto Luciano Corominas will expire.

Percival Pena is running for senator for the Partido de la Unidad Nacional (PUN) for the province of Santo Domingo. He defended the flight, saying that while it may have been imprudent, it was an act of dignity.
