Mainly calm during election

The head of the Electoral Military Police, General Eduardo Mani announced yesterday, Monday 16 May 2016 that six people lost their lives during the whole electoral process but that all incidents had occurred outside the voting centers.

He said that on 15 May 2016, Election Day itself, 38 firearms were confiscated in order to guarantee the safety of voting centers.

According to the General, 100 teams were deployed across the country to ensure safety during the elections.

Central Electoral Board (JCE) president Roberto Rosario confirmed that once the polling stations had closed, six deaths had been reported throughout the country. He attributed the incidents to the tension generated by the counting process.

He said that the idea of the electronic count was to speed things up and reduce tension and expressed regret at the deaths. He did not provide the names of the deceased although it is known that two were in Yamasa and one in Cepillo, Moncion in Santo Rodgriguez province.

Rosario said that the election campaign was peaceful as was the voting with more than 70% of the electorate exercising their right to vote. He said the problem that had to be resolved was that people should go home when the voting was over, and let the members of the electoral colleges do their job and count the votes.
