Economists and business organizations have compiled the list of priorities for the next Danilo Medina administration, as reported in Diario Libre.
Speaking in March, National Business Council (Conep) president Rafael Blanco Canto said that the main priorities were to strengthen public institutions, the electricity and fiscal pacts and the amendments to the Labor Code. Regarding the labor changes sought, Blanco Canto says that there needs to be more flexibility in hiring, working hours and severance payments. Conep believes that the high severance payments discourage companies from raising wages, maintaining them low. Regarding the amendments to the tax regime, businesspeople want the government to rationalize public spending, and implement controls to make it more efficient while making taxation fairer for all.
