Perceived as one of the most corrupt individuals in the world by Transparency International’s Unmask the Corrupt poll, San Juan de la Maguana senator Felix Bautista looks set to continue in post. As of the fifth bulletin issued yesterday, Monday 16 May 2016, he had received 62,632 (68.5%) of the vote from the PLD and allies. He is only surpassed as of the 5th bulletin by PLD candidate for Independencia province, Juan Orlando Mercedes Sena (70.24% from 13,964 votes).
Bautista, the organizational secretary of the ruling PLD party, has been taken to court on several occasions but has been able to maneuver to ensure his case has never been heard.
Cristina Lizardo representing the PLD for the province of Santo Domingo with 67.85% (from 195,846 voters). Bautista celebrated with a victory march through the main streets of San Juan de la Maguana.
Bautista has been criticized for amassing great wealth during the years he directed the Office of Supervisory Works of the State (OISOE) during the governments of President Leonel Fernandez (1996-2000, 2004-2008 and 2008-2012).
