Judge Eddy Olivares of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) says that the plenary of the organization has to account for the alleged resignation of 3,000 IT clerks on the eve of the election and for the hitches in the operation of the electronic devices used in the election at the start and end of the poll. Olivares says that no penalties are established in Electoral Law 275-97 for anyone resigning the night before the election. He said he is awaiting a report on the resignations. He said that some problems were encountered at the start of the voting process, such as delays in the equipment’s arrival at the voting centers, and with fingerprint recognition. The technicians were supposedly in charge of installing the equipment in the voting centers. In a press release issued yesterday, Monday 16 May 2016, Rosario announced that the technicians “inexplicably” resigned from their jobs. This led to two-hour delays in the start of the polls. Rosario said that new technicians had to be trained in the late evening to replace their predecessors who resigned.
Like Eddy Olivares, JCE judge Jose Angel Aquino said he is not aware of the resignation of the 3,000 technicians as reported by presiding judge Roberto Rosario.
