PRM presidential candidate Luis Abinader conceded defeat to President Danilo Medina of the ruling PLD yesterday, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 before denouncing a series of alleged irregularities during the election process. At the time of his statement, Bulletin 6 of the JCE showed President Danilo Medina winning with 61.65% of the vote to 35.29% of Luis Abinader.
Abinader said that President Danilo Medina should govern but must also listen to the main opposition party. He said that although the PRM had not come out of the process victorious it had gained the trust of millions of Dominicans.
Abinader said he would continue to fight for democracy and the country’s wellbeing and warned fellow party members who had won posts to remain vigilant so as not to be affected by officialdom.
He stated that the PRM would not accept any results for the general elections that did not come from the manual count of the votes.
He expressed satisfaction that the PRM, a minority party, has now achieved status as the country’s main political alternative.
Addressing the Dominican people, he called for respect for the Constitution, rather than continuing to change it for personal interest. He also stressed that there should be true separation and independence of the branches of government. Abinader said the party would not continue to accept the actions of a Superior Electoral Tribunal that mocks democracy or a Central Electoral Board that believes it is above the law. He stated that its members should be replaced by honorable, honest and skilled citizens with no political affiliation.
