The Dominican women’s volleyball team (ranked seventh) failed in its bid to qualify as one of the 12 teams to play in the Rio Olympics after losing its first four games in the Japan qualifier played this week in Tokyo. The DR has lost all four matches to Italy (ranked 4th), Peru (23rd), the Netherlands (18th) and Thailand (12th). It has yet to play Japan, South Korea and Kazakhstan. The DR played in the Athens Olympics in 2004 (11th place), and the London Olympics in 2012 (5th place).
The DR had entered the tournament as a strong prospect for one of the top three slots for the Olympics.
