New term of office; same Senate

With the results of last Sunday’s elections nearly all counted, it is evident that at least 28 of the 32 senators will remain in the Senate next 16 August, according to the seventh bulletin from the Central Electoral Board (JCE). The familiar faces on the Senate floor include Amable Aristy Castro who will be serving his sixth term for the province of La Altagracia (Higuey). He has been in the Senate since 1990.

Another well-known personality on the Senate floor will be Wilton Guerrero from Peravia province, serving his fourth term in office.

According to Diario Libre, the PLD has maintained its majority at congressional level.

In some areas, the results are still too close to call. The Senate seat for the province of Valverde is being hotly contested between the PLD candidate and his PRSC rival. The PLD also has conflicts with the same party in the province of San Pedro de Macoris where former senator Jose Hazim is looking to gain his seat back. In Puerto Plata the main opposition party, the PRM has apparently obtained nearly 51% of the votes at congressional level, meaning that young deputy Jose Ignacio Paliza could take the Senate seat for the province. In El Seibo, with nearly 52% of the votes counted, the PRM is also leading with its candidate Santiago Zorilla.
