The DR is mourning the death of 90-year old painter Fernando Pena Defillo, who passed away on Wednesday evening, 18 May 2016 in Jarabacoa where he had retired. He is regarded as a master of abstract expressionism. Following graduation from the national art school he traveled to Spain and other European countries where he lived for decades developing his art.
His works can be seen at the Fernando Pena Defillo Museum in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. The museum is a joint initiative between the artist and his family with the objective to make his works and legacy better known in the art world. The museum is located at Calle Padre Billini 251 corner Jose Reyes, Tel 809 689-8609.
He joins other masters of Dominican painting who have died recently including Candido Bido (7 March 2011), Antonio “Cuquito” Pena (18 June 2013), Guillo Perez (9 March 2014), Ramon Oviedo (12 July 2015) and Jose Rincon Mora (5 May 2016).
