The National Business Council (Conep) reaffirmed yesterday, Sunday 22 May 2016 that the current electoral regime is obsolete and requires urgent reform. It called on the National Congress to work towards the immediate approval of a new electoral bill and political parties bill with the versions prepared by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and complemented by the Foundation for Institutionalism and Justice (Finjus).
“The unfortunate incidents and protests that the country has witnessed recently are a reflection of just how outdated and lacking in effectiveness the current legal and institutional framework for elections is,” stated the leading business group.
The Conep recalled that over the past four years they have demanded that Congress pass the bill to provide an adequate framework for the most complex elections that have been carried out in the past 20 years.
