With only two wins, grabbed at the end of the World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Tokyo, the Dominican Republic women’s volleyball selection failed to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics. The DR team had qualified for Athens 2004 and London 2012.
The DR defeated Kazakhstan 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 12-25, 20-25) and the next day, South Korea 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 28-26).
At the end, Yonkaira Pena of Dominican Republic was recognized for being one of the top three top individual serving performances for her play in the game between the DR and Korea on 22 May. Brenda Castillo was voted best libero.
The countries that qualified in Japan were: Italy, Japan, Netherlands and South Korea.
Coach Kwiek said that the lack of team training time was one of the key factors for his team’s poor performance in Japan.
