The National District electoral board has authorized recounts for the legislative and municipal elections in 674 voting stations because the electoral ballots were received without the correctly completed certifications or without the certificate, as reported in El Dia.
The chairman of the National District Electoral Board, Santiago Sosa said that the decision was taken in order to tally the votes more accurately. He said that 220 voting stations are known to not have reported the certificates or they were not filled in correctly. The tally could affect the councilors and deputies for the area. Sosa said they were working in coordination with political party delegates to ensure that the ballots are correctly allocated.
Afterwards, it is known that Luis Abinader, former presidential candidate for the PRM, and most of the candidates for the three areas of the National District, visited the National District Electoral Board and requested a recount of 100% of the votes at those levels. As reported in El Dia, Abinader says he has proof that the electronic vote count differs from the manual count in most of the country. “We are going to accept where we lost, but votes need to be counted one by one. In any society the law must be met,” he said. “If the JCE issues a resolution and commits to doing something, but then violates the law, we cannot stay put,” he said.
