On 30 May, 55 years ago yesterday, the dictator Rafael L. Trujillo was assassinated when driving from the capital to San Cristobal at night.
A group of men intercepted and shot him at kilometer 9 of George Washington Avenue, at the point where the monument to the Heroes of 30 May now stands.
The seven attackers were Antonio Imbert Barreras, Antonio de la Maza, Salvador Estrella Sadhala, Lieutenant Amado Garcia Guerrero, Pedro Livio Cedeno, Luis Manuel Caceres and Huascar Tejeda.
Trujillo’s death ended a repressive regime that began in 1930 and lasted 31 years.
Commemorative events took place at the monument on the Malecon yesterday. Anti-Trujillo activists Eduardo Sanchez Cabral and Jose Antonio Bonilla Artiles were honored posthumously, and the contributions made to the struggle against the dictatorship by George Rodriguez and lawyer Federico Carlos Alvarez were also recognized.
