General Imbert Barrera dies at 96

General ad-vitam Antonio Imbert Barrera, best known as one of the participants in the assassination of dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo on 30 May 1961, passed away at around 4am this morning, Tuesday 31 May 2016 at his Av. Sarasota residence in Santo Domingo. His death coincided with the 55th anniversary of the assassination yesterday, Monday 30 May 2016.

Imbert was the only survivor of the ambush on the dictator’s car, which took place on the Malecon. He was declared a national hero and given the rank of ad-vitam general in the army. Imbert was born in Puerto Plata on 3 December 1920.

During the April 1965 war he supported the coup against the democratically elected Juan Bosch government. He was appointed minister of the Armed Forces from 1986 to 1988, and then chairman of the management board of Rosario Dominicana gold mine as of 1989.
