Domingo Antonio Polanco, 24 named as Malecon accident casualty

National District firefighters have revealed the identity of the young man who died after a Sangyong SUV swerved off the Malecon and fell into the sea at around 3am on Thursday, 2 June 2016 as 24-year old Domingo Antonio Polanco. According to reports, the driver lost control as he tried to avoid hitting a taxi that had made a sudden turn into the road. Three other men survived the accident: Juan (Junior) Bido, Edward Ranfis Martinez and Justo Elvis Hernandez. The vehicle, which was being driven by Bido, was going eastwards along the Malecon.

Polanco’s father Domingo, a professional baseball umpire, said that his son had just completed his medical training and that his companions had been his friends since primary school.

As reported in El Nuevo Diario, AMET agents salvaged the vehicle from the sea.

Listin Diario points out that this is the second accident in just over a month where a vehicle in which the victim was traveling plunged into the Caribbean Sea. The previous tragedy involved the late Paula Restituyo on 24 April when she was on her way home by bus at night after graduating in law from the UASD.
