If you love mangos, head west to Bani for the annual Expo Mango Fair, organized by Pro Mango, the mango cluster. The daytime event is being held from 9-12 June at the Plazoleta del Ayuntamiento de Bani off the city’s Central Park. Now in its fourth year, the fair is an opportunity for the general public to taste some of the 200 varieties of mango cultivated in the country, learn about the production and meet the farmers, and for the farmers themselves to meet suppliers and new technology.
When announcing the fair, Minister of Agriculture Angel Estevez said that Dominican mango exports were up 7%, with US$14.3 million worth in 2015. He said mangos are planted on around 53 square kilometers mostly in the provinces of Peravia (Bani), San Cristobal, Azua, San Juan de la Maguana and Barahona.
