The Weather Agency (Onamet) says that rains will continue nationwide, mainly this afternoon and evening, Tuesday, 7 June 2016, as a trough moves across the island. Heavy rainfall is expected in the northeast, northwest and central mountain range areas.
Five provinces are still on flood alert. The Emergency Operations Center (COE) is maintaining five provinces on green alert against possible flooding, overflowing of rivers and streams and mudslides. The provinces are Santiago, Monsenor Nouel (Bonao), La Vega, Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui) and San Cristobal.
Meanwhile the alert has been lifted for the provinces of San Juan de la Maguana, Santiago Rodriguez, Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua), Hato Mayor, San Pedro de Macoris, Peravia (Bani), Dajabon, Montecristi (especially the areas near the Yaque del Norte River), Elias Pina, Monte Plata, Valverde (Mao), Puerto Plata and Greater Santo Domingo.
Onamet is also informs that precautionary measures are being implemented in the areas surrounding reservoirs as the country’s largest dams, including Jimenoa, Moncion, Rio Blanco and Tavera are now at or near their high levels.
