Santo Domingo North remains tense

Yesterday afternoon, Monday 6 June 2016, the atmosphere in the area surrounding the municipal court in Santo Domingo North was tense. Military personnel were deployed to guard the area in anticipation of a protest by the followers of the mayor, Francisco Fernandez.

All traffic was diverted near the court and at the same time several military vehicles arrived along with police and military agents, who did not allow anyone to pass, neither vehicles nor pedestrians. All neighboring shops and businesses were closed and many complained that the situation in the area had mostly been like that since Election Day.

Fernandez, who is the current mayor and a member of the PRD, which is allied to the PLD, was running for reelection but claims he has been the victim of fraud.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has declared the case closed and announced the winner as the PLD’s Rene Polanco.
