A 2.5-meter statue of veteran Dominican baseball player Juan Marichal was unveiled at the Quisqueya Stadium, now the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium (Law 11-15) yesterday, Tuesday 7 June 2016. Juan Marichal was the first Dominican pitcher to be inducted in the Major League Baseball Cooperstown Hall of Fame. Visibly moved, Marichal expressed his gratitude for the honor and said he was proud to receive it and that it had been unexpected. He said it was one of the most important moments in his life.
Prominent figures at the ceremony also included Minister of Sports Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal and Dominican Professional Baseball League president Leonardo Matos Berrido and representatives of Dominican professional baseball teams.
