According to the president of the Bani Mango Growers’ Association (Abapromango), Andres Mejia, mango cultivation has continued despite the severe drought that affected the country for almost 14 months, and producers expect to double exports this year.
In 2015 the country exported more than 14,000 kg of mango worth approximately US$17.5 million dollars. The country has about 5,300 hectares and 1,500 organized commercial mango plantations, mainly in the southern region (Peravia, San Cristobal, Azua, San Juan, Barahona, and Neyba).
The President of the Dominican Mango Cluster (ProMango), Rafael Leger said that the rains in April and May this year had saved this year’s crop and would enable them to have a good mango harvest.
The theme of this year’s Expo Mango 2016 in Bani is “Sustainable Technology for Competitiveness.”
The mango fair, with producer prices, mango tastings, and educational talks for consumers and professionals, takes place from 9-13 June 2016 at the city hall plaza and central park area of Bani.
June and July are the peak mango production months. Visitors to the fair will have the chance to discover all the country’s mango varieties and the types of technology available.
