Motorcycles: The plague in the DR

The Dominican Republic has one of the highest rates in Latin America in terms of crimes committed by people on motorcycles. Listin Diario reports that 80 of every 100 muggings on city streets are carried out by people on motorbikes. These muggings have increased in recent months and can occur at any time and on any day. Making matters worse, 54% of all vehicles (3,612,964 registered vehicles) on the roads in the DR are motorcycles, with approximately two million in circulation, in addition to an estimated 600,000 that are not registered by the Tax Agency (DGII). The DGII describes the motorcyclists as “a plague” due to the high number of traffic accidents that they are involved in for failure to observe safety regulations, and because they are often used in criminal acts. The unregistered motorcycles are usually the ones that arrive as parts and are assembled in the country.
