Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito is warning that he will challenge any decision taken during the changeover process at local government level. He expressed particular concern about the practice of fast-tracked granting of licenses for operating gas stations, selling plots in cemeteries, and other promises made by the outgoing administrations before handing over power to their successors. He said that the process of transition has given rise to certain behaviors in many local councils and he was concerned at the level of debt that could arise with land sales along with non-authorized financial operations.
Dominguez Brito said that these practices could mean that the incoming authorities would be committed to certain situations and has instructed prosecutors to keep an eye on any situation that may arise.
The Attorney General also warned current mayors that they should abstain from any actions that contravene the rules and that they would be prosecuted if there were any violations of the local authorities law.
