Deputies approve firearms bill

During a session yesterday, Wednesday 8 June 2016 in which the Chamber of Deputies declared the legislation urgent, deputies approved the bill that changes regulations on firearms, munitions, explosives and other such materials in two consecutive readings.

The bill, originally drafted by deputy Victor (Ito) Bisono Haza (PRSC) 10 years ago, had been studied by the Interior and Police Permanent Commission, which presented a favorable report with a few modifications. The changes adjusted prison terms and fines, and passed on the dispositions on the closure of some establishments and similar modifications to the judiciary. The deputies also wanted the legislation to cover forms to be filled out and other bureaucratic issues.

The bill is for prevention and control of firearms in the hands of the public; control of weapons, including those carried by the military and police, as well as for promoting the gradual disarmament of the population through the establishment of judicial processes.
