Tour operator TUI has informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that a Dutch couple died while on honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, on Sunday, 12 June 2016. According to reports, a 31-year old man and his 28-year old wife from Voorburg, Jeroen Venema and 28-year old Michou de Graaf, went on an excursion to the nature reserve on Saona Island on Saturday with around 40 other tourists. That evening they dined in their Punta Cana hotel. The woman fell ill that night complaining of food poisoning and went to the hospital, where she died the following day. The man was also admitted to the hospital and died later the same day.
All other hotel guests and people who went on the same excursion are still alive and well.
The Dutch embassy in Santo Domingo is involved and the bodies have been taken to Santo Domingo while relatives are on their way from the Netherlands to carry out a formal identification of the bodies.
Autopsies are being carried out in Santo Domingo.
