Presidency spokesman says tax increases are imminent

Presidency communications director Roberto Rodriguez Marchena appeared on a TV program on Monday, 13 June 2016 and told viewers that more taxes were needed if there is to be better security.

He made a call to businesspeople, the middle class, workers and entrepreneurs to work together to establish where the resources for heightened security levels should come from.

He said that the move to send in 12,000 troops to reinforce city patrols was a temporary measure and that permanent measures need to be taken to reduce crime.

The business sector has called on the government to cut down on contraband and informal sector, as well as to reduce the high levels of wasteful spending and political patronage instead of raising taxes for those who are already paying taxes.
